I love setting. The barn in the photo used to sit down the road from where I lived in East King County, Washington. The barn was gone last time I visited the area and I moved away nearly a decade ago. The time seems impossible to me as I remember my home there so clearly.
I loved the way it smelled of pine and how you could always smell the rain. Living in Washington, sunny days were never to be taken for granted and were always a cause for celebration. Living in a rural area, while I heard cars down on the main street and the barking of dogs, there were plenty of birds around.
Our local post office once had a sign for a lost cow. Not long after, someone posted in the local Facebook group about a cow chasing them in a local park.
The setting wasn’t just the kaleidoscope of greens and the blue or gray of the skies, it was the personality. I love infusing places with personality. And, as the image above illustrates, I tend to like moody, slightly spooky personalities. Those things always come out in my writing.
Because of that, I’ll be starting to use more photos of places I’ve been, particularly places I’ve written about in my newsletter. I’d also love to hear about the places you love as well. Places with personality and those that intrigue you.
