Writing and Editing
This week was about editing more than writing. I finished a read through of a fourth book in the Jewel Midlife Magic series. I like the story. I like the second half of the book but the first half was painful. Not so much the story but the writing. I need to let that sit so I can figure out how to redraft that part to make it flow.
I think the problem is the words used were stilted and awkward. Holly didn’t have enough opinions. I was writing what was happening but my main character wasn’t sharing what they thought and when they got around to it, it was rather unexpected.
Sometimes these things happen. At least the story is worth keeping. Sometimes I don’t even like that!
I do find that when I’m reading better writers my writing gets better. If only I could always be reading a Dean Koontz. He’s much more economical with words and that means I start getting more economical, which helps my writing and scene setting. Unfortunately, while prolific, he is not *that* prolific! So I have to rely on other authors.
At any rate, the cats are here. My hyperthyroid cat that had the radioactive iodine treatment is now slightly hypothyroid. This happens in about 5% of the cats treated. Leave it to him to be special. Sigh. For his trouble of going to the vet yesterday, he’s sitting next to the keyboard. He can stay there until he decides he wants on the keyboard. Because while he’s not an orange cat, he is a himbo kinda cat.
